New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling
Awards Seton Students $500 Grant
The New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling has awarded Seton Catholic Central a $500.00 Grant. The grant will be used to fund an initiative coordinated by Seton’s Sustainability Club which will be working to divert waste from landfills and promoting the general reduction of wasteful habits.
The initiative funded by the grant will be an on-site composting project. This includes the purchase of composting bins, tools, cafeteria buckets, and promotional materials. All composting will be done at Seton by the student body. The intent is to prevent a large quantity of food wastes from being added to landfills. Student and kitchen wastes will be composted, as well as leaves collected from the school grounds. The resulting compost will provide nutrient rich humus for use in a proposed organic garden. The project will begin on December 1 during lunch periods.
“The ‘Green School Grant Program’ awards up to $500.00 to schools that offer a plan to add or upgrade existing programs to reduce, reuse, or recycle. I am extremely proud that Seton’s Sustainability Club applied for and has been granted the $500 in full,” said Richard Bucci, principal.
Additionally, some of the money will go toward upgrading and revitalizing the school’s recycling program. This will include more clearly defined bins in the cafeteria, recycling sites throughout the school, and new recycling capabilities. The students hope to begin recycling more student cafeteria wastes, including paper, hard plastics, cartons, and plastic film. They will also begin a more effective coordination of battery, electronic, and ink cartridge recycling. As with the composting, this project is aimed at diverting wastes from the dumpster and to promote shifts in lifestyles to limit waste production.
